Choosing Camps and Lodges in Africa

There are many fine camps and lodges to be found throughout East Africa, each with something special to offer. Below we have listed just a few of those that we have a special fondness for as each offers something very unique, not to be found in other camps or lodges. We recommend only those lodges and camps which we feel will give our clients the very finest in services.

We have listed here those that are a “must” to include in any East Africa itinerary.

El Karama Ranch:
Located on the vast central Laikipia Plateau, El Karama is a private working ranch covering 16,000 acres. This is a working ranch but is also home to an abundance of wildlife. The ranch maintains a very nice small intimate camp. The tents are very comfortable each with a nice out front sitting area. The food here is exceptional and staff very friendly and accommodating. The camp is achieving a “green status,” with the extensive use of solar power and all food coming from the ranch. Here you can not only go on game drives, you can go hiking with a guide. This is an all “green” camp, using solar power, growing all their own food.

Ikeweta Camp:
Located just outside Meru National Park. Meru is a spectacular park but is little visited. Thus for those looking to get away from the throngs of other tourists and visit a quiet park with lots of wildlife, this is the place. The camp is new and is owned and operated by Americans, making North Americans clients feel right at home. The tents are large and very comfortable, and the food absolutely delicious. Evening dinners, you can sit out under the stars.

Mara Leisure Camp:
Located just outside the central northern border of the Maasai Mara, this camp is in the best possible location for wildlife viewing and cultural activities. No matter the time of year, there is always easy access to wildlife no matter where they are in the Mara. You are also in the heart of Maasai ranches where it is possible to visit local villages and participate in the sponsorship of Maasai schools.

Larsen’s Camp:
Located inside Samburu National Reserve on the banks of the Ewaso N’giro River, this is a small luxury camp. Larsen’s has only 20 large spacious open tents, each with a verandah overlooking the river. For those looking for a small intimate camp that offers the best in comfort, views and experience you could ask for, this is the camp for you. www.wildernesslodges.co.ke/larsens_info.html

Flamboyant House:
Located on beautiful Diani Beach on the south coast of Kenya, this is small and very intimate beach resort. The staff, the rooms, the food the views are all incomparable! In addition, Flamboyant House also operates the Ali Barbours Cave Restaurant next door. This is fabulous restaurant in a coral reef cave. They also have the Forty Thieves Bar right on the beach. In our humble opinion, best beach bar anywhere!!! www.flamboyant.co

Sarova Hotels, Lodges and Camps:
Sarova operates a number of hotels, lodge and camps throughout Kenya including some of the very best parks and reserves. All Sarova accommodations offer many amenities, comfortable accommodations and exceptional meals. www.sarovahotels.com

Sun Africa Hotels:
(Keekorok, Lake Naivasha Country Club and Lake Baringo Club).
Keekorok Lodge is the oldest camp in the Maasai Mara and steeped in history. The lodge is in the central Mara with easy access to most locations where wildlife can be found. It is also only a short distance from the landing strip making it convenient for those flying into the Mara.

Samburu Game Lodge:
Situated on the banks of the Ewaso N’giro River, the lodge is made up of cozy cabins, all facing the river.

Serena Hotels, Lodges and Camps:
Serena operates hotels, lodges and camps in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda. The excellent accommodations range from mid range in cost to upscale. www.serenahotels.com/default-en.html

There is only one camp in Zambia that we recommend, Kafunta Safaris Camps. Situated in The South Luangwa National Park, the Park is one of the great African parks and its unspoiled wilderness is teeming with wildlife. You will experience all the comfort and excitement an African safari can offer, whether that be in the luxury of our classic safari lodge, Kafunta River Lodge, or the more rustic and adventurous wilderness camp, Island Bush Camp, or a combination of both. A Zambia safari lets you experience the essence of Africa. www.luangwa.com/
